BARASSI THE STAGE SHOW is touring Victoria and northern Tasmania in August 2014 following the success, rave reviews and recommendation from the man himself, Ron Barrasi, of the Arts Centre Melbourne season in 2013. Ron Barassi said of the stage production “ It’s Fantastic” (3AW Neil Mitchell)

Written and directed by award-winning playwright, Tee O’Neill, BARASSI THE STAGE SHOW features ex-AFL star, Russell Robertson and many members of the original cast.

To some, Ron Barassi is the iconic Australian Rules footballer. To others, a champion coach, motivational speaker and elder statesman. This epic, uniquely Victorian story takes audiences on a journey through “footy” history and lore, crossing generations and depicting Ron’s life from regional Victoria and his mother’s move to Tasmania.

BARASSI The Stage Show begins in World War II with Ron’s father, Ron Sr., himself a champion footballer and one of the Rats of Tobruk, who is tragically killed in Libya. This loss inspires the passionate development of Ron Jr. into “Mr Football” under the care of a no nonsense mother and mentorship of the legendary coach, Norm Smith.

A timeless expose of Australia’s favourite sport and of the man deemed one of its most important figures, BARASSI The Stage Show reveals the driving force behind Barassi’s glory playing days and coaching successes, following his path from underdog to superstar, and his team’s triumphs from “wooden spooners” to premiers. Number 31 is often daunted, but never beaten.
