"We are bound by the secrets we share" - Zoe Heller.
Every year the Savage family gathers at their Wirramai farm to celebrate Anzac Day - a day considered the lowlight for everyone except bullying patriarch and Vietnam veteran, Ron Savage.
Devoted middle child Angel still clings to the wreck of their family home. Oldest daughter Devina plays being happily married to an absent husband. And youngest daughter, Cassie, uses drugs, alcohol and a vicious wit to cope with a family determined not to address a childhood secret. Over the course of this tragic final weekend together as a family they show themselves to be enmeshed but loving - ultimately unable to survive decades of trauma, cover up and shame.
'Sandy Fairthorne has touched on heavy themes with poise and depth, with humour, wit and profundity' - Theatre People.
'The Savages of Wirramai' penetrates to a place of real honesty and vulnerability... Simple and powerful. La Mama has unearthed a gem that deserves to be seen by a wider audience.' - Ralph Scolarsh.
