MSO Plays Petrushka

Please note:

The MSO is pleased to announce that Jorge Luis Prats will be performing in place of Hélène Grimaud who had to withdraw from her Australian tour for personal reasons.

The change to the program will see Prats perform Tchaikovsky’s romantic piano concerto no.1.

The repertoire will be performed as follows:

Kats-Chernin New work WORLD PREMIERE
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1
Stravinsky Petrushka

We apologise for any inconvenience this change may have caused and look forward to welcoming Jorge Luis Prats in joining Bramwell Tovey and the MSO.

Revised in 1947, Stravinsky’s extraordinary ballet burlesque, Petrushka captures the love triangle of one of Russia’s great folk characters Petrushka, and two other puppets, a Ballerina and a Moor.

Set in St. Petersburg’s historic Shrovetide Fair, this universally familiar story became one of the greatest productions of the Ballets Russes and is still much loved by audiences and musicians alike across the world today.

A new work from MSO’s 2017 Composer-in-Residence, Elena Kats-Chernin opens the concert before Bartók’s final work, his Piano Concerto No.3, takes you to a blissful, happy place, with its three movements full of Hungarian folk song jois de vivre and energetically vivid optimism.

Bringing Bartók’s Piano Concerto No.3 to life is Jorge Luis Prats, conducted under the direction of Bramwell Tovey.

The MSO is delighted to welcome Elena Kats-Chernin, one of Australia’s leading composers, as its 2017 Composer in Residence.
